Delete A Group from CentOS / Red Hat / Fedora / Ubuntu and Scientific Linux

To remove a group from the system ,you use the ‘ groupdel ‘ command as a root.

The syntax for groupdel command as shown below

groupdel [options] GROUP_NAME

When we run ‘groupdel’ command on shell prompt these files are used and affected.

 /etc/group                                             Group account information.
/etc/gshadow                                        Secure group account information.

To delete a group From the system:

[root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/group | grep dev_admin
dev_admin:x:981:

[root@localhost ~]# groupdel dev_admin


[root@localhost ~]# cat /etc/group | grep dev_admin
[root@localhost ~]#


Below are the options which can be used with  the ‘groupdel’ command.

  -R, –root CHROOT_DIR              directory to chroot into
